Expect: live-action rap dioramas, an interactive recording studio experience and a whole-scale redefinition of what it means to consume anything, let alone art and music.
ART: Montreal-based interdisciplinary artist Shelley Miller is known for her über-creative uses of mixed media, from graffiti icing to book sculptures, and now she has teamed with local DJ and rap impresario More of Les for Museum of Indulgence, an installation exploring the intersections between hip-hop stereotypes and consumer culture.
The week also includes panel discussions on the portrayal of suicide and drug addiction in film and the arts. Films this year include opening weekend features such as Yelling to the Sky, about a young woman growing up surrounded by addiction (Zoe Kravitz and Gabourey Sidibe) and Jules Bruff’s verité depression exposé Part Time Fabulous (director Alethea Root will be in attendance). Programmed films (or sets of shorts) include many filmmakers, medical professionals and individuals sharing their personal experiences after films. FILM: Discussing the lives that people with mental illnesses lead often gets short shrift as politicians and medical professionals dominate discourses about treatment and recovery, which is why the Rendezvous With Madness Film Festival is so unique and necessary. The Royal Ontario Museum will help round out the offerings with a talk called Maya: Secrets of their Ancient World, which is actually a sneak preview of the museum’s upcoming historical Mesoamerican exhibition. FESTIVAL: Viva Mexico Mariachi will provide the soul-stirring soundtrack for a two-day melée of the macabre at Harbourfront Centre’s Day of the Dead Festival, which this year features lots for the living to enjoy, including: a special film showcase focused on the comedian Cantinflas (“the Charlie Chaplin of Mexico”), food demos with chef Luis Valenzuela and pastry chef Elizabeth Rumebe, a special day of the dead craft bazaar, traditional Mexican folk dancing and even pan de muerto (day of the dead bread).
